Derm SCE

How long does it take to prepare for the SCE? A realistic timeline

When in training to sit the Dermatology SCE, how many months of revision you really need, and a practical month-by-month plan from foundation to mocks.

How long you need comes down to your starting point and how much clinic time you have already had. But the planning principles are remarkably consistent among people who pass comfortably.

When should you sit it?

UK trainees usually take the SCE in the penultimate year of higher specialty training, normally after MRCP(UK). Sitting it once you have had broad clinic exposure, with time to read around the cases you have seen, makes the content far less abstract.

How many months of revision?

intensive minimum (full-time)
2 months
comfortable, balanced norm
6 months
beats cramming, every time
daily

A focused full-time candidate can get ready in about two months, but most people are better off starting around six months out, studying a few hours most days rather than cramming, and sitting timed papers regularly. Little and often wins: steady, spaced practice sticks far better than weekend marathons.

A phased plan keeps the breadth of the curriculum manageable.

A month-by-month plan

  • Weeks one and two: get your bearings. Download the blueprint, skim a question book to learn the style, and map out every topic you need to cover.
  • Month one: start the engine. Begin your main question bank. Do the questions first, then read around each answer in Bolognia or Rook's.
  • Months two to four: build breadth. Work steadily through the BAD and NICE guidance, finish the official sample questions, and keep a running list of weak areas.
  • Month five: consolidate. Re-drill the weak topics and use DermNet for focused visual practice.
  • Final month: simulate. Timed mock papers, quick flashcard and image review, then a gentle taper into exam day.

Whatever your timeline, the throughline is the same. Consistent question practice, an honest eye on your weak areas, and enough runway that the final weeks are revision and not first contact.
